Educare Fund
Educare Fund supports the education of girls at Secondary School level in Lesotho.
Government funding is available for Primary and Higher education in this country for orphans, as a priority, but many children do not fully qualify for these funds. Secondary education mostly must be paid for by parents. It is relatively expensive, and many girls from poorer families do not get past this level of education, let alone reach university.
In the past, when families had to make a choice, because they could not afford to educate all their children, it was often the girls who had to leave school. Changes in recent times have led to more gender equality in this regard. However, socially women and girls still bear the greater burden/responsibility for raising children and caring for families.
The challenges that lead to girls dropping out of education early are often because of family poverty. The rural landscape makes education even tougher for poorer families; not only can it be challenging to pay for education, but they also must consider travel on top of uniforms, books and exam fees.

What We Do
The aim of Educare Fund is to support the girls and their families to keep them in Secondary school by paying a proportion of the annual school fees. In this way, we work in partnership with the families, and this gives them a continuing stake in their child’s education. The level of support is determined by the funds available, which also applies to the number of girls supported each year.
Currently, Educare Fund is supporting 80 girls in different schools dotted round the country. The Covid-19 pandemic had a huge negative impact on the economies of the world, but the effect on families in poor countries like Lesotho was much worse.
The compelling reason for supporting only the education of girls currently is that their impact is much higher. Girls, as future mothers can reduce poverty in future generations much more effectively. In giving individual girls, the opportunity to benefit from high school education and beyond, Educare Fund seeks to empower Lesotho women as a group, to the benefit of their families, their communities and the country.
Many of our beneficiaries have over the years successfully finished high school and gone on to complete degree level education
